Progress Memo #1

So far in this class I have learned the importance of Evidence Based Practice and The Code of Ethics.  I have learned how they will impact my daily practices.  I have learned that The Code of Ethics is something that you do, and not just a piece of paper.  It is an important responsibility that we have to uphold the profession.  We must take it seriously.  If not, our profession will begin to be seen in a negative light.  I have learned how to read an article and rate it according to its quality.  Evidence Based Practice requires that we rely on only the best and most relevant information available to us.  Knowing what makes an article reliable and useful will come in handy when I am on my own and need to get correct information for me and my patients.

I have learned to look critically at articles and understand their parts.  Before I just skipped the parts that did not make sense to me; I am no longer able to do this.  This has allowed me to feel more confident in my own opinions because there is knowledge behind them now.  I can now formulate my own clinical question.  This is something that is still difficult and confusing for me.  But, I have learned the basics of it so far.  This means that I will be able to begin my own research when the time comes.  I will be able to systematically form a question that will be clear to others and specific enough to study.  I will be able to research anything I wish after I put it in the PICO format.

There are not many things that still do not make sense to me.  Like I stated before, I still need some help in formulating my own clinical question.  I find myself getting confused on how to be very specific.  Sometimes I do not understand how to put it into words and phrase it correctly.  I also have trouble researching articles.  A systematic search eludes me, and I feel as though I am finding articles by luck.  I do not have much experience with this at all.  Coming up with multiple keywords is frustrating.  Sometimes I can only think of a couple that are obvious.  This clearly limits my search.  I would like to become a better researcher because it is something that I have avoided my whole college career.  To be honest, it strikes fear into my heart.
